Leadership Training
With increasing pressure to improve care quality, while simultaneously lowering healthcare delivery costs, it is essential that physicians strengthen their leadership and business skills. Below are some local courses where physicians learn to manage and diffuse conflict, develop effective best practices, create solutions, and prepare to lead organized medicine.
Degree Programs:
This program is offered in conjunction with Texas Woman’s University (TWU) and gives students the opportunity to obtain the fundamental health services management skills required for a successful career. In addition, there’s an opportunity for a dual Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) and MBA degree. As part of the program, students take courses at both TWU and UST.
Rice programs and courses are deliberately designed to maximize learning and transfer of knowledge by incorporating assessments, lecture, case studies, group activity, simulations, and coaching. Their blended teaching methodology results in a highly engaged classroom and deep learning.
This program is tailored to mid-career health professionals who need formal management knowledge to enhance their career. This is a 12 course/48-credit hour master's degree program takes 24 months to complete, and is taught one weekend a month. It is conveniently located at the Houston Campus of the Texas A&M Health Science Center. For questions regarding admissions contact Monica Garner at e-mha@tamhsc.edu. Texas A&M Health Science Center has also developed a leadership course that emphasizes interactive, scenario-based training. Courses are in five, two-day sessions.
MBA - Health Care Administration - 15 month program, 36 hours, $17,000, No GMAT or GRE required.
MBA – Women in Leadership Emphasis- 12 month program, 36 hours, $17,000. Hybrid online and face to face Saturday classes. No GMAT or GRE required.
While an MBA enables you to be a business manager, a dual MHA/MBA from UHCL empowers you for a career as a top-level executive in the healthcare industry. Courses taught online and face-to-face will enhance your knowledge of global business, corporate finance and decision-making. You will learn from experienced professors in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, which will give you opportunities for networking, internships and your future career.
Non-Degree Programs:
Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston offers this leadership training designed to empower women leaders to identify their unique facets, to ask for what they want, and to bring their whole best selves to work. The program is designed - by women for women - to bring together research-based insights and professional leadership experiences of Bauer faculty and industry leaders so as to create an empowering learning experience. Sessions are highly interactive and promote open conversations and dialogue.
The mission of Leadership Houston is to enlighten, empower, and engage diverse community leaders through a broadened knowledge of Houston and increase their civic leadership capacity for the benefit of Greater Houston and its stakeholders.
Rice Advanced Management Program
Delivered in two one-week sessions separated by an intersession, the Rice Advanced Management Program (formerly Accelerated Development Program (ADP) is an immersion program exclusively designed for high potential leaders to successfully move into general management or functional lead roles.
The TMALC was established in 2010 as part of TMA's effort to ensure strong and sustainable physician leadership with organized medicine. TMALC graduates serve as thought leaders who can close the divide among clinicians and health care policymakers, and as trusted leaders within their local communities. With more than 40 hours of classroom instruction, the TMA Leadership College was designed for active TMA members under the age of 40 or who are in the first eight years of practice.

The nonprofit organization's mission is to join and strengthen diverse leaders to serve the common good. Assessment and Educational Programs:
KSTAR (Knowledge, Skills, Training, Assessment and Research), through TAMHSC-Rural and Community Health Institute, is an internationally recognized program that provides comprehensive and individualized assessments and educational programs for physicians who have perceived needs or want to return to practice after a prolonged absence. Its main goal is to optimize patient safety by providing solutions that will benefit the physician, the health care system and the patient.
